Scar Revision
Plastic Surgery
Board Certified Plastic Surgeon, David P. Rapaport, MD is in
private practice in Manhattan, New York and commonly
performs scar revision surgery. Scar revision is the name
given to a group of surgical techniques used to alter the
appearance of scar tissue, blending it in with the
surrounding skin area. Scar revision surgery cannot
completely remove a scar but rather is can drastically
improve the appearance of the scar. Scar revision
surgery can be used to improve keloid scars, acne scars,
burn scars, hypertrophic scars, contractures and facial
scars, as well as scars were caused by injury or previous
operations.
What is scar revision surgery? Surgical scar revision
is the surgical excision of a scar followed by
reconstruction of the wound with either reapproximation of
the tissue, flap reconstruction, or Z-plasty (a type of skin
manipulation performed to alter the direction of a scar). Most of these
procedures can be done on an outpatient basis with local
anesthesia and sedation.
At what age can scar revision surgery be performed?
Scar revision can be performed at anytime and has no age
barriers.
Am I a candidate for scar revision? The most
important factor in determining whether or not to pursue
scar revision is to truly think about how much a scar
bothers you. The other important factors include the size
and depth of the wound, the blood supply to the area, the
thickness and color of your skin, the direction of the scar,
and the tension of the wound, and your bodies response to
healing. If you tend to scar poorly, you’re chances of
having an unacceptable scar after scar revision surgery is
higher. During your your consultation with the doctor
at his Manhattan, New York office, the plastic surgeon will
discuss the possible outcome of your surgery and answer any
questions that you may have.
Where will my
scar revision be performed? Your scar revision
surgery will be performed personally by Board Certified
Plastic Surgeon, David P. Rapaport, MD at his fully
accredited surgical suite in Manhattan, New York City.
When will I be
able to see the results from my scar revision surgery?
The results from the surgery are immediate however,
the old scar has been altered or removed and a new scar is
forming -- it is up to you and the plastic surgeon surgeon
to continue maintenance and therapy in some cases, such as
silicone sheeting or corticosteroid injections.
