What are the benefits of breast reduction surgery?
Breast reduction surgery can
correct a number of problems associated with enlarged
breasts, including: back and neck pain, shoulder strain,
poor posture, skin irritation and infection, shortness of
breath, difficulty participating in sports or other
recreational activities, difficulty fitting clothes,
social/sexual embarrassment.
What does breast reduction surgery involve? Breast
reduction surgery is almost always performed under general
anesthesia . Normally, the plastic surgeon will make an
incision similar in shape to an anchor or inverted keyhole
that encompasses the area from the top of the nipple to the
crease of the breast. Then, the plastic surgeon
removes excess fat, skin, and tissue and repositions the
remaining skin and areola. Breast reduction surgery
typically takes two - three hours.
How soon will I be able to return to work? Most breast
reduction surgery patients resume their daily routines
within 1-2 weeks. However, you should wait several weeks
before resuming mild exercise or other strenuous activities.
You should be extremely gentle with your breasts for six
weeks following surgery.
Is there anything I should do to prepare myself for
breast reduction surgery? During your initial
consultation at teh doctors NYC office, you will need to
give David P. Rapaport, MD your complete medical history.
This includes allergies, other surgeries you have undergone,
and all medications you are currently taking. Prior to your
surgery, the most important thing you can do is quit smoking
cigarettes. Cigarette smoking can lead to complications
during your recovery from breast reduction surgery.
Where there by any scars? Where are the incisions made?
The incisions are made within the natural folds under the
breasts, around the areolae in a line from the crease to the
areolae. Like a keyhole in many cases. The breast reduction
procedure is not a minor one and scars should be expected.
The scars generally fade over time.
